Law Vs Grace Part 2

The Book of Galatians

Understanding the Gospel - Galatians 1

The book of Galatians was written by Paul to counter false teachers who were

undermining the central New Testament doctrine of Justification by faith. In

Galatians 3:11, it mentions that the righteous man shall live by faith; and which is

also quoted in Romans 1:17 and Habakkuk 2:4.

Paul divided the book of Galatians in 3 sections to counter the false teachings of

pushing Judaism into the Gospel. In Chapters 1-2, he explains the authenticity of the

gospel, chapters 3-4, he explains the superiority of the gospel and 5- 6 he explains

that the gospel is spirit.

To understand justification and grace we must understand the gospel and its

Authenticity. What is the gospel? It is the Good News. 1 Corinthians 15:1-3, explains:

“Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the Word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.”

The above scriptures indicate that the gospel is not complicated, it is simply that

Christ died for us and redeemed us. There is nothing that needs to be added to this

gospel. Galatians 3:24 says the Law became a tutor to lead us to Christ. The law is

only a tutor not a saviour , redeemer or rescuer.

Paul went in great length to defend the gospel. In verse 1, he says it is not from men or the agency of men. In verse 11, he says he did not receive it from man, nor was he taught by man, but received it from Jesus. He went so far in verse 8 and says if I should come again and preach something else, let me be a curse.

Laying the foundation of law vs grace Paul did only only defend the gospel, but explains

who is the center of the gospel. In verse 4 he says that Christ gave himself up for our

sins. In verse 7 Paul says anything that is preached, even if it is how near the truth, it

is not another gospel. There is only one gospel. In verse 6, Paul says any other gospel

is deserting Christ.

Let us understand that the work of Christ is complete and profound. Keeping the

sabbath, practicing circumcision, abstaining from food etc, cannot bring you closer

to God.
